A Discovered Check occurs by moving a single unit (chess piece) that delivers a
check and allows or opens attacks another enemy unit at the same time.
Pieces that can deliver a Discovered Check:
Diagram 1:
Locate the White Pawn on d5.
Now locate the White Bishop on
b3 (both pieces are outlined in
Black). The Bishop would be
attacking the King if your Pawn
was not in the way. Now look to
see what our Pawn can attack if
we push our Pawn forward one
square.
Diagram 2:
Looking at where the Pawn
attacks was a great idea!
When we push the White Pawn
to d6 (as the diagram shows) we
do two things.
- First we open the Bishops
diagonal and place Blacks
Kings in check..
- Second our Pawn now
attacks the Queen.
Outcome:
Black needs to get out of check and therefore cannot save the Queen.
Some might think playing Queen to e6 or e7 would save her, but the Bishop
can still capture her on either square.
