U.S. Chess Mates - Double Check
U.S. Chess Mates
Professional Chess Instruction for Children of all Ages.
A Double Check occurs when you use two of your units to attack your opponents
King simultaneously.

Pieces that can create a Double Attack:

  •        Queen
  •        Rook
  •        Bishop
  •        Knight
Diagram 1:

If you look at the white bishop and the white rook they are lined up on the same file.
The only thing stopping the rook from delivering check is the bishop is in the way. If
you look at the bishop its on a dark colored square - the same as the black king.  Can
you find a way to have both the rook and the bishop deliver check?
Diagram 2:

When the white bishop captures the black pawn on b6 you open up the d file to
deliver check to the king with your rook as well as deliver check with the bishop now
on b6. The pawn on a7 cannot capture the bishop because the king must get out of
check first.

**Double checks are a great way of forcing your opponent to make moves he/she
might have not wanted to make. It also takes away 2 out of the 3 ways to get out of
check. When being attacked by a double check you cannot block the attack and you
cannot capture the piece attacking you - only leaving you the option of moving your
king. Double attacks are a very powerful tactic that takes a lot of practice.
