A Pin is an attack on an enemy unit that shields a more valuable enemy unit.

There are two kinds of pins:

  • Absolute - When the piece being pinned is pinned against the king

  • Relative - When the piece being pinned is pinned against another piece.

Pieces that Pin:

  • Queen
  • Rook
  • Bishop
Bishop Pin Example

White has not lost yet. Even though white is loosing in material the pin will save the
game.

The white bishop on d3 is attacking the queen who is pinned to the king. The queen
is pinned because if she tries to move the bishop would then deliver check to the
king. The queen may not move - hench the name pin. The black king must move and
white will capture the black queen and will draw the game instead of loose the game.
