Check occurs when your king is on a square that is being attacked by an enemy unit.
This could be a rank, file, or diagonal. It could also be a check from a knight which
means you must move or capture the piece. Kings cannot place each other in check.
When a check occurs you must deal with the matter immediately. You cannot move
another piece unless it helps you get out of check. You must get your king safe.
There are three ways to get your king safe when your being placed in check. You can
- Block the attack with one of your pieces making the attack on another piece
instead of your king.
- Capture the piece that is attacking your king with your king or another piece
you have in play. Your king cannot take a piece that is protected. Meaning if
you take the protected piece you would still be in check.
- Move your king onto a square that is not being attacked by an enemy unit.
In the diagram to the left, the black king is being attacked by the white bishop on b5.
This is check because the king is in the bishops line of attack. There are two ways
the king can get out of check. He can move forward or block the bishops attacking
line by pushing the pawn, bishop or knight forward.
