U.S. Chess Mates - Checkmate

Chess Basics
Checkmate is when your king is being attacked (check) and has no available way to
get out of check, no matter what. Checkmate means that while your king is being
attacked (check) their is no way to:

  • Block the enemy unit that is attacking your king

  • Capture the enemy unit that  is attacking your king

  • Move your king to a safe square

When looking to checkmate your opponents king try and find the squares he can
goto and attack them. You need to find a way to trap the king in a corner, against the
wall, between their pieces, your pieces and then deliver a check.

In the diagram to the left the black king is under attack by the white rook on a8. The
black king cannot use any of his pieces in play to block the rooks attack. There are
no black units that can capture the attacking rook. And the king cannot move out of
the attack. The king can move to h7 but the white bishop attacks that square and if
the king moved their he would not be out of check. If the king moves to h8, or f8 the
rook would still be delivering check.

Checkmate can occur at anytime in the game. The fastest checkmate is in two
moves. Unpractical but it can happen. There are also a lot of openings that focus on
early checkmates. So be careful.
