Chess Basics
In order to read chess books you need to know chess notation. Notation is good to
know because it will allow you to document your games and study chess books.
When writing notation you start with the piece. Each piece is represented by a letter
except the Pawn.

Once you have identified the piece -  you will then need to write the square that the
piece has moved to. When fining a square we need to know about Ranks and Files.

  • Ranks - are always marked with the numbers 1-8 and move horizontal
    across the chess board.

  • Files - are always marked with the letters a-h and move vertical along the
    chess board.

When identifying a square we start with the rank then the file.  Example: a1 or a2.

In the Diagram below the White Pawn has moved to e4 and because we do not use
a letter before a Pawn move this would be written as just e4. Blacks first was also
just a Pawn move so again this would be written as e5. Whites next move is Knight
to f3. Now that we have moved a piece we will place a letter in front of the square
that it has moved to. Whites second move would be written as Nf3. Blacks second
move will be Knight to c6. Whites third move will be Bishop to b5 this will be written
as Bb5.

So in this game we would write it as follows:

1. e4, e5     2. Nf3, Nc6    3. Bb5

Each move should have a number in order of turns followed by Whites move and
then a comma separating the moves and then Blacks move.

There are alot of other symbols used in chess notation. This just covers how the
basic pieces are notated. Other symbols you might find while using chess notation
are:

+               means Check
++         means Checkmate
x               means to capture a piece
0-0           means a Kingside Castle
0-0-0       means a Queenside Castle

These are the basic symbols used in notation. They are more that classify more
detailed moves but this is all you need to know to get started.
