U.S. Chess Mates - Knight
U.S. Chess Mates
Professional Chess Instruction for Children of all Ages.

You start the game of chess with 2 knights. Knights are the only piece in chess that can
jump over other pieces.
more. Kind of like the letter "L" in any direction. They can move forward and backwards
as they choose.
When a knight jumps over other pieces he does not capture them. Knights only capture
pieces when the final square landed on is being occupied by an enemy unit. If one of
your pieces is occupying that square the knight may not move there.
The knight located closer to the middle of the board can attack eight squares in a circle
like fashion.
Knights are better in closed games, because they can jump through a pawn chain.
Knights are great for sneak attacks and combinations. Knights are great when used
offensively. Getting a protected knight across the board can take away a lot of space
from your opponent, while attacking a lot of pieces at once. When we have a piece in
chess that attacks multiple pieces at once we call if a fork. Knights are great for this
tactic. Because of the eight square reach a night can attack a lot of very important
pieces. In chess we have a famous fork called the "Family Fork" and it occurs when a
knight attacks a king, queen, and rook all at the same time.
