U.S. Chess Mates - Rook
U.S. Chess Mates
Professional Chess Instruction for Children of all Ages.
Piece Movement
Rook are located in the corners of the chess board.

Rooks move up and down as far as they would like. Rooks are a great way to protect
and attack from a distance.

Rooks capture pieces by moving onto the same square as an enemy unit. Rooks may
not capture and keep going. They must stop on the square if they captured a piece.
Rooks can become easily trapped if your pieces are in its path.

Rooks are great for protecting the 8th rank and your kings castled position. Rooks are
better when they are placed on open or half open files. This means the pawn for your file
is no longer their and your rook can attack forward across the board toward your
opponent.

Rooks can be very effective when stacked together.

Rooks are good at creating lines your opponents king cannot cross.

Rooks are good at protecting a pass pawn.

Rooks generally are developed early but not brought into action until later in the game.

Rooks are very good at checkmating your opponent. Rooks can be used with a king to
deliver checkmate but they are used in a variety of different checkmates.
