Our founder has been playing chess since he was 4 years old. Learning
from  his  father  he  continued  his  chess  education,  winning  school
tournaments and club tournaments until he began teaching chess at the
age of 18 here in Fremont, CA.

He started under Chess Expert Riley Hughes and has worked and played
with some of California's best chess players. Some of those chess players
include:

  • Chess Expert Riley Hughes
  • International Master  Guillermo Rey
  • Chess Master James Eade - Writer of "Chess for Dummies"
  • Chess Master Eric Schiller

When Steven was 20 years old he was voted on the Board of Cal-Chess
(A
non-profit organization that represents the USCF in Northern California.).
He
continued to serve on that board until the board was plagued by dis honest
business owners of other Bay Area Chess Companies.

In  2004  Our  founder moved from the Bay Area and extended their chess
operation to  over 30 schools outside of the Bay Area. Now returning to the
Bay Area in  2008 Steven has found his program has been doing well and is
expanding  do  to  his great leadership and focus on customer relations and
his personal attention to every child he meets.

Steven  is also a Tournament Director under the USCF and will soon start
holding rated tournaments for their students. Steven has also helped plan
and  execute  one  of the largest tournaments in California the Cal-Chess
tournament held in Santa Clara every Spring.

The U.S. Chess Mates program has grown to over 75 classes a week and
has a great following for
Monthly Tournaments and Friday Night Chess -
hosted at the U.S. Chess Mates Chess Center located in Fremont, CA.
